Under the Microscope
I was lucky to get the chance to participate in a Master's Class by Jette Clover called "Finding your Voice" in 2014/2015. Norwegian and Swedish Art Quilters were the participants.
We choosed a theme each of us, og my theme became "Under the Microscope". I chose this theme because of my interest in Microbiology. I have studied the theme in school. Besides my pharmaceutical education, I have taken some subjects at the University in Oslo, as Physiology and Anatomy, Cell Biology, Microbiology and Virology.
I think it is very fascinating to watch the cells under the microscope, to watch the building stones in subject matters and in human beeings, animals and plants. I am also stunned by the colors of crystals in inorganic compounds under the microscope.
What are we made of? Where do we come from? The BIG questions! How precise and diverse the nature is! The evolution...and nowadays when the human beeings themselves decide over life and death, the selections of genes, the gen modifications, artificial fertilization,...
In many of these works I have used sheer fabrics as georgette, silks, nylons, tulle, because these small parts we are made of, are so small and delicate and vulnerable, and of many layers. I have used watersoluble material as a help in the quilting.
The developement of photo techniques and the electron microscope has given us extraordinary pictures of the very smallest building bricks of the human machinery. My challenge has been to liberate myself from these photos and turn my impressions into my own images.
